John has joined a group of international politicians to become part of a campaign to support Belarus political prisoners. The politicians become pen friends with the prisoners and provide a valuable link to the outside world during their captivity.
John has given his support to the MP for Putney, (Fleur Anderson), in introducing her Bill on plastic free wet wipes. It was a 10 minute rule Bill so there was no opportunity for anyone to speaker on the issue other than the primary mover of the Bill.
Following the Chancellor's budget parliament has several days of debate where Members have the opportunity to comment on the budget and draw attention to specific issues. The debate is divided up into sections.
Parliament Week is an annual series of events which aim to inspire interest in parliament, politics and democracy and encourage young people and the public to engage with the UK’s democratic system. It takes place in the first week of November.
No one wants to have raw sewage discharged into our rivers and other water courses and I fully support work to eliminate this. I am therefore pleased that within the Environment Bill we have some important obligations set on water companies to work towards this.
The number of unemployment benefit claimants in the Henley constituency is down another 65 this month and now stands at 1,460. This is a rate of 2.5% of the population between 16 and 64 which is exactly half the UK rate. The figure of those unemployed who are 18-24 was 20 lower.
A great deal of confusion has been created by the campaigners in the constituency who have asked for support for my colleague, Philip Dunne’s Private Members Bill, the Sewage (Inland Waters) Bill. This was introduced in February 2020.
