Campaign Responses

I often receive dozens of campaign emails from constituents concerned about a huge variety of issues. These emails have very similar wording and are generated via third party websites. Due to the vast increase in the volume of campaign emails now being generated, I can no longer guarantee replying to these individually and will therefore be posting my thoughts and views on these issues in this section of my website. This is for practical purposes and does not reflect the seriousness with which I consider issues raised.

Please also note that I do not sign EDMs. They are costly and rarely ever get debated. I prefer to raise issues of concern directly with the relevant Minister. Please see here for my note on this.

Response to campaign emails from teaching unions

The Government is not pursuing its own agenda in dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic.  The truth of the matter is that schools may not be returning on 1st  June, it depends on the scientific evidence.

Save British Nature

The Environment Bill will place environmental ambition and accountability at the heart of Government. I am pleased that legislative measures will be introduced to address the biggest environmental priorities of our age.

Points based immigration system

When people voted to leave the EU, they did so in the knowledge that the free movement system imposed by the EU would end. The Home Secretary has been clear that she has a particular responsibility to take back control and bring an end to free movement once and for all.

The Mental Health Act Review White Paper

Treating and caring for people in a safe, compassionate environment – for both patients and staff – is a top priority for the Government. It is also, as I said during the election, a top priority for me too.  This note is in response to those who have written to me with concerns.

Animals and Animal Sentience

I understand the concerns on this matter. I am proud that the UK has some of the highest standards of animal welfare in the world, and that there is comprehensive legislation to uphold these standards now that  we have formally left the EU.

A&E Waiting Times

I am aware that A&E targets were missed in a number of areas of the country in December.

HS2

I am happy to include a link to the Statement made yesterday in Parliament by the Prime Minister indicating that the Government will proceed with HS2 https://hansard.par

Abortion Bill

I would like to start by stating that I recognise that abortion is a sensitive issue. Regardless of where your view lies, it is important that this matter is considered with due care and sensitivity.

SODC Local Plan

The situation with regard to SODC’s continuing ownership of its Local Plan could be easily solved by SODC.  All it needs to do is allow the Plan to continue to examination in public before a Planning Inspector and for the Council to add potentially significant amendments and modifications for the

Environment Bill

I am pleased that the Bill will ensure the environment is at the heart of all policy making and that this and future governments are held to account if they fail to uphold their environmental duties.

The Agriculture Bill

We must use our departure from the European Union to create a green country, where our environmental standards are not only maintained but enhanced.  The Agriculture Bill will enable a balance between food production and the environment which will safeguard our countryside and farming communities

On shore wind

I am very pleased that we have placed clean growth at the heart of Government. Our strategy aims to cut emissions while keeping costs down for consumers and also creating high value jobs and helping to grow the economy.
