John has condemned new crackdowns on political opposition and civil dissent in recent months in Turkey and urged the Turkish authorities to “take meaningful steps” to improve standards in the field of democracy, rule of law and human rights.
On almost a daily basis I receive communications from constituents on our current situation and on whether we should go back into lockdown or simply take away all restrictions. I welcome the Government’s tier system which I think provides a middle way between these two extremes.
In his role as a Turkish monitor on behalf of the Council of Europe John has added his voice to call for the immediate release of arrested opposition members in Turkey.
As a delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, John is delighted to have been invited to present the Flag of Honour to the Polish town of Minsk Mazowiecki on Sunday 4th October 2020. The ceremony will be conducted virtually on zoom.
